Mayo

Mayo is a diverse and dynamic electorate.

The electorate spans 9,135km2 across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island.

The area is home to more than 173,000 people, with Mount Barker our largest, and fastest growing, population centre. The other major towns include Stirling, Birdwood, Hahndorf, Strathalbyn, Clarendon, Langhorne Creek, Aldinga, McLaren Vale, Meadows, Willunga, Yankalilla, Goolwa, Victor Harbor and Kingscote.

As well as our residential areas, Mayo is known for primary production. Our landscape is dotted with orchards, vineyards, dairies and farms. The result is some of the best produce in the country. We’re also an important area for South Australia’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

The electorate was established in 1984 and named after social activist Dr Helen Mayo OBE (1878-1967) who pioneered advancement in the fields of medicine, education and women’s health.
