I’m Rebekha Sharkie, your independent voice for Mayo.

I’ve lived here for decades – it’s where I raised my children and where my husband runs a small construction business. When I speak in Canberra, I speak as your neighbour.

I work every day to make sure Mayo’s voice is heard on the issues that matter most to our community.

Woodside Barracks Update

More than 200 people attended a recent community information session on the future of the Woodside Barracks, showing just how important this site is to our community.

The meeting gave locals the opportunity to hear directly from the Department of Defence and ask questions following the decision to sell the Barracks as part of the national Defence Estate divestment process.

While many people remain disappointed by the decision to sell the site, the focus is now shifting to what happens next and ensuring our community has a strong voice in shaping that future.

I am supporting the formation of a community working group to help identify future uses for the Barracks and ensure local knowledge and ideas are part of the process.

Community feedback to date has been clear. People want to see outcomes that benefit the wider community, conserve the environmental values of the site and respect its long connection with Woodside and the Adelaide Hills.

This is an opportunity to create something special that future generations can enjoy and benefit from.

Our local Mt Barker TAFE is a fantastic example of responsive, accessible vocational education and training. With courses ranging from nursing and defence training opportunities to hospitality, automotive, literacy and numeracy, TAFE is helping people build practical skills and create pathways to rewarding careers. During National Skills Week, it was wonderful to visit Mt Barker TAFE and celebrate the achievements and success of students and educators. Skills and vocational education play such an important role in strengthening our local communities and workforce. #NationalSkillsWeek ... See MoreSee Less

Relief for more than

Relief for more than 830,000 older Australians, now that the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CSHP) is being retained. I’ve advocated for CHSP, as a critical early intervention when people need help to live safely and independently at home. Whilst this is positive news, there still so much more to be done to improve the aged care system. ... See MoreSee Less

Gambling harm is devastating to families and communities – and advertising is a big part of the problem, especially for kids. Australians deserve real action and stronger protections, and the Government’s legislation has failed to deliver that and failed to adequately respond to the Murphy Report on gambling.
In the end, I voted against the bill, because it simply doesn’t do enough. Here’s part of my recent speech in the issue:
